The ' What Does Your Body Need' Diet !

The What Does Your Body Need DIET!

It's January, the start of a new year, what is on most people's minds?

You guessed it...How do I loose weight once and for all?... I really need to do this for my health...
My clothes are tight after the holidays...I feel exhausted and sluggish. BLAH, BLAH, BLAH!

So, they decide to go all out and set out to start Jan 1st...cutting this and that and the other out...pretty soon, they are down to a salad and water...no, to everything that might stop the weight coming off.

Wait a minute...this is actually going to be counter productive. Your body will be detoxing and think it has just entered a famine and hold onto all the extra weight, just to survive. You will feel awful and you will have no energy, to lift that limp lettuce leaf.

By March 1st, you will have stopped exercising and probably 2 days into your new diet you will be on a binge of all the things, you deprived yourself of. You will not only feel bad in your body BUT, you will have started berating yourself and how you always do this and, you always fail. You throw the towel in and just vow to start next January.

Lets rewind all that. There is a way to stop the madness.

1. Take a long slow deep breath and another one...now lets make a doable plan.

2. Instead of removing everything, how about adding in better choices e.g. more water, vegetables,
protein and good fats (olive oil, avocado etc)

3. SLOW DOWN...you don't have to make all the changes you want in the first day. Choose 1-2
things to change. Once you have them integrated choose another couple.

4. Get moving...go for a walk...do some yoga...take the stairs.

5. Where can you reduce your stress? Stress causes your body to hold onto weight.
RELAX...what can you do to give yourself some care and attention e.g. an afternoon nap,
   something you enjoy doing.

6. Have FUN, everyday...whatever your pleasure is e.g. singing to a great song on the radio.

7. Ask yourself...What does my body need now? If the answer is potato chips (the whole bag)...
ask again and really listen, you will hear the perfect thing...maybe you are thirsty?

There are a couple of other options I would suggest.

1. If you would like Clean Eating Support...USANA'S Nutrimeal Free and Digestive Enzyme will
  help as your body adjusts.

2. Maybe your cravings are interfering with the voice in your head about what your body really
needs. USANA'S Reset, will give you a 5 day break...to Reset your body.

3. If you find your energy is sagging USANA'S Rev 3 surge...will give you that healthy boost you

How to Rock a Stress Free Holiday Season!

                                         THRIVE DURING THE HOLIDAY SEASON.

Four Tips to A Stress Free Holiday Season.

MAKE A PLAN...and like when you go travelling...you put all your clothes on the bed and
then remove 1/3 and take the remaining...(well I've never actually done this...but I like the idea of it)

1. What can I cut out? e.g. your dinner, how about one side dish...instead of many?
You know those Christmas cards you hate to write...if you don't love doing something,
and it brings you no joy...ditch it...no guilt!

2. Outsource where possible. e.g. can you get someone to put up the Christmas lights?
How about buying the antipasto (no-one really cares, they just want to spend time
    with you and have fun)

3. Delegate. e.g. get the kids involved in wrapping presents (if they are old enough), last
year my 23 year old son wrapped presents for me.a job I abhor!
Or if you are having guests and they ask to help, get them to bring something
     e.g. wine or dessert.

4. Selfcare. - Let go of perfectionism! (and your stress levels will decrease)

                    - Do something relaxing...lie down for 10 mins with no distractions,
get a massage or a manicure/pedicure...whatever gives you pleasure.

                    - Soak your feet in epsom salts for 20 mins x2 week...releases toxins.

                    - Watch out for emotional reactions and drama...I know your Aunt Molly
is soooo annoying BUT, it is their stuff...just smile, take a deep breath and
think of something really funny to distract yourself...it always helps to
remind yourself that you won't remember any of it in 5 years!
                    - FOCUS on eating a healthy diet , eat plenty of vegetables, get good quality
protein and drink 2 Litres of water everyday.
Take  pharmaceutical grade supplements...helps support your immune

BLACK MAGIC ? To Supplement or not to Supplement ?

USANA Supplements and Athletes.

Oct 31st, 2015....I watched the NZ ALLBLACKS...go #BLACLKTOBLACK and win the 2015 Rugby World Cup....(being a Kiwi this meant a lot!).

What I observed, was athletes so fit, fast, agile, side stepping and running strongly to the try line. So much fun to watch!

My thoughts then turned to the individual athletes and how hard they must train to be this good. I began wondering if they took supplements to help their bodies recover, repair and strengthen.
About 90% of the NZ ALLBACKS take supplements. I have no idea which ones. I do know they have to be very careful about what they choose. They cannot afford to invest banned substances unknowingly. They are individually held responsible. as are all athletes. That is why so many top athletes take USANA supplements.

Go Play!

I remember very well being a little "rug rat" running around in my Mother's kitchen on some bright
summer day not so long ago, getting in her way as she cooked or cleaned, and generally making a pest of myself.

I can also remember her often expressed and exasperated command, "Go play!".

STEP 1. Choose a protein source.

All these protein sources are pure,high-quality and from a natural source.

WHEY - non-hormone treated cows.
PLANTBASE - pea and potato protein.

The flavour is is mild vanilla that blends well with other flavours or on its own.

Per serving = 18 grams protein
                         8 grams fibre
6 grams fat ( mainly from coconut oil )
                         0 grams sugar
             only 150 calories.

This means that one MySmartFoods Shake a day, taken with USANA's Essentials can help restore balance to your diet and provide you with the essential macro-nutrients to support your health goals.

It will help you feel full...the fat, fibre, and protein also help boost your overall metabolism.

- It takes more work to digest, metabolize and use, it burns more calories.
- Takes longer to leave your stomach, hence you feel fuller sooner and for a longer amount of time.
- Helps build lean muscle which makes you stronger and more toned and increases your metabolism.
- Protein-rich breakfasts can help regulate appetite all day.

-An important component of every cell.

The beauty of the personalization  is that you can choose what suits your body...we are all individuals...we may need different proteins at different stages in our lives or on different days.

My protein of choice is PLANT...I have been using the new MySmartFood Shakes every morning for the past 2 months...I LOOOVE it.
It is quick, easy and gives me a satisfying breakfast. I am up at 530 am and rushing out the door at 630am,  so I need a fast to prepare nutritious breakfast. I have found it lasts me until lunchtime and helps me choose wisely during the day.

Ac"cell"erate Your Health!

Human Cells

Have you heard that the human body contains a trillion cells?  Well, you heard wrong.  Modern estimates are that your body contains between 50 and 100 trillion cells.

  Isn't that amazing?

However, if you are like me, and you don't always have a pocket protector, a slide rule and a few mechanical pencils handy at all times, you hear these kinds of numbers and really have no real concept of what a trillion is, much less a mind boggling 50-100 trillion.

Let me use an example I found using seconds of time as a way to help us grasp these kinds of numbers. A second goes by pretty fast, wouldn't you say?  Well, a 1,000 seconds ago was about 17 minutes.  A million seconds ago was about 12 days past and 31.7 years ago would be a billion seconds in the past.  A trillion seconds ago you could be sharing space with a mastodon (no feeding or petting please) because you would have gone back in time 31,709.8 years.  50 trillion seconds ago (don't miss the first appearance of mankind on earth as we pass) is approximately 1,585,000 years ago.

Are your 100 billion brain cells boggled?  Mine are strewn about the room utterly exhausted.

USANA’s Pure Rest Featured On The Dr. Oz Show

Dr. Oz and Dr. Micheal Dreus, The Sleep Doctor, offer tips on getting a good night’s sleep.

Start a Journal

Stress is a major factor in keeping people awake during the night. One way to reduce the stress and keep your mind worry free is to use a journal.

Create a to-do list. After dinner, take about 10 min and list the simple, practical solutions to achieving the items on your list. You are now on your way to crossing those items off your list!

Then close the journal and put it away.

Reduce the amount of light exposure before going to bed.

Regular use of the computer, TV, E-readers and smartphones before bedtime actually suppresses melatonin levels - which is the body’s sleep hormone.

Try reading books in printed form to alleviate additional light. Limit computer and TV time.

Take a melatonin supplement.

Melatonin is natural hormone that controls your sleep and wake cycles. Melatonin levels usually start rising late evening, continue to stay high during the night and then slowly drops in the early morning.

USANA’s Pure Rest is a high-quality melatonin supplement that is safe and effective as well as non-habit forming.

I take 1 mg. tablet approximately 60 minutes before I get ready for bed. I let it dissolve under my tongue which helps get the Pure Rest into my system quicker.

It helps me fall asleep so I feel rested and energized in the morning.

True or False: No Food Before A Workout

You want to burn calories and lose weight so you shouldn’t eat before a workout.  Right?

The truth is you should eat a snack about 30 minutes before you exercise so your body has enough energy to get you through your workout. Think of it like fuel for a car. If you don’t put enough gas in your car, you won’t get to where you need to be.  If you don’t eat before a workout, this causes low blood sugar and in turn will cause light-headedness and fatigue. Another problem of working on an empty stomach is that you will burn off calories but you’ll also be burning off muscle.

Muscle tissue is made up of mostly protein. If you aren’t getting enough protein during your workouts, you may lose muscle mass because your body resorts to breaking down its own tissue in search of fuel. The best way to combat this is to eat enough protein, carbs and fat during the day and before a strenuous workout.

Now you don’t need to consume a full meal but a light snack packed with carbs and protein will do the trick.

Here are a few ideas to get you started.

What's so SMART about MySmartFoods from USANA Health Sciences?

Connect with me on FaceBook
In a previous post we discussed USANA Health Science's  release of their new food line called MySmartFoods.

In this post, I want to make you more aware of  the reasons why I am excited about these new shakes and bars, and I think, once we are through, you will be excited too.

Let's use the "SMART" in MySmartFoods to make it easy to see, and remember, why I am so eager to incorporate these foods into my daily routine.

Exercise or Excercuse: 5 Simple Ways To Make Exercise A Habit

So what's excercuse? Is it even a word?

According to the Urban Dictionary, the definition is: lame reasons not to exercise, often complete BS; usually the result of extreme self-consciousness when it comes to public exercise.

Now, I could easily list all the reasons, stories, excuses or whatever you want to call them of why people don't exercise. The truth is...it just doesn't matter. Besides that, it just turns into a pity party.

I could tell you all the incredible workouts, equipment, dvds and gyms that are out there for you but won't do any good if you don't use them.

Instead, let's break it down into easy habits that will get your exercise in for the day.

One of the hottest topics in the functional medicine world is what is referred to as "the second brain".  Have you ever heard of "the second brain"?  No ladies, it's not that.  It is your gut, your digestive system, that long journey that your food takes from your mouth to Uranus.

More and more everyday, through medical research, we are seeing the importance of maintaining the health of our gut and the detrimental effects to our overall health when it is not kept operating properly.

How Healthy Is Organic Food?

Ever since I can remember, we have always had a garden in my family. So I have continued the time-honored practice with my own family.

I enjoy everything from getting the garden ready and being outside on a daily basis to harvesting the food and collecting the seeds for next year.

Recently, my brother and I were having a discussion about organic products. As we began debating the subject, we both begin to realize that we had different ideas on what we thought made a product organic.

So what is the definition of organic?

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines organic as “grown or made without the use of artificial chemicals.”

Simple right? Not quite.

Let the Sun Shine In!

If you are not sunbathing on a regular basis, you are probably not as healthy as you could be.

I bet that got your attention!  Yeah, I know.  I've heard all the reports and seen all the headlines too.

For as long as I can remember, we have been told, through blaring headlines or news reports, to avoid the sun at all cost.  Never go out in the sun without suncreen of at least SPF15.  Wear long sleeves, hats etc...to protect our skin from the harmful rays of the sun.  We are led to believe that we are all a sunny day away from dying of skin cancer.

Technicolor Dreamers and the Rest of Us

I don't know if
I am weird or not, but I can literally go to sleep just about anytime and anyplace simply by closing
my eyes and usually, in less than 5 minutes.  I mean, deep, rafter rocking snoring, rapid eye movement, slobber down the chin sleep in less than 5 minutes just by closing my eyes.  My wife, on the other hand, has the hardest time getting to sleep, even when it is well past our bed time, and she is exhausted.

But when she does get to sleep, she tells me that she has the most vivid dreams in full and glorious technicolor.  I rarely remember a dream, and if I do, they are always in, Andy Griffith show, black and white.

How about you?

Portion Distortion

Have you ever seen street art like this?

Artist: Julian Beever

This artwork was created using chalk, a wide-lens camera and a sidewalk.

By looking through a wide-lens camera he has set up, the artist is able to create the illusion that the drawing is 3-D on a flat surface.

Here is the same art viewed at the “wrong angle" - what a difference

Artist: Julian Beever

Quite different looking at it this way! The drawing is warped, stretched and actually 3 times the size.

The artist “tricks” your eye and mind into perceiving that the picture is something different than what it really appears to be.

This is exactly what happens with our eating habits. This phenomenon is called portion distortion. You can bet that restaurants are aware exactly what this is.

Vampires, College Students and the Graveyard Shift

Kind of sounds like the title of a bad horror flick.

Have you guessed what all three have in common?

That’s right, they like or need to stay up during the night.

Now the only way vampires can survive is to sleep during the day so they don’t need our help with this.

What about the other two? Let’s find out why third shift and college students are up until the wee hours of the morning.

Living in an Instant World

Sir James Murray/Original Editor Oxford English Dict.
I just finished reading a book in which was described the process that was followed to complete the 600,000 words, 3 million quotations and a 1000 years of English contained in the Oxford Dictionary of the English Language.

There were some really fascinating (I know some of you find that hard to believe.) and amazing things to do with the people and processes they used to complete it, but one thing stood out to me more than any other:  It took over 70 years to complete.

Diets, Disney and Dudley Do-Right

                                                  Diets, Disney and Dudley Do-Right?

 Do diets work?

 Of course they do!

If by work you mean that you can lose weight on a particular diet.  I've lost weight on virtually every diet I have ever tried, as long as I followed it accurately and stuck with it for some length of time.  I do remember several diets that I started on Monday am that ended around Monday noon, but the ones that I managed to stick with allowed me to lose varying degrees of weight.  Is that your experience?  I bet it is.

So if virtually every diet works, why are you sitting there, pushed back from the table with your pants unfastened?  That's because, though virtually every diet will allow you to lose weight, they aren't sustainable over the long haul, not to mention that some are extremely unhealthy, so we revert back to our regular diet and the cycle begins again.
