How Healthy Is Organic Food?





Ever since I can remember, we have always had a garden in my family. So I have continued the time-honored practice with my own family.

I enjoy everything from getting the garden ready and being outside on a daily basis to harvesting the food and collecting the seeds for next year. 

Recently, my brother and I were having a discussion about organic products. As we began debating the subject, we both begin to realize that we had different ideas on what we thought made a product organic.

So what is the definition of organic? 

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines organic as “grown or made without the use of artificial chemicals.”

Simple right? Not quite.

Technicolor Dreamers and the Rest of Us

                                                 
I don't know if
 I am weird or not, but I can literally go to sleep just about anytime and anyplace simply by closing 
my eyes and usually, in less than 5 minutes.  I mean, deep, rafter rocking snoring, rapid eye movement, slobber down the chin sleep in less than 5 minutes just by closing my eyes.  My wife, on the other hand, has the hardest time getting to sleep, even when it is well past our bed time, and she is exhausted.

But when she does get to sleep, she tells me that she has the most vivid dreams in full and glorious technicolor.  I rarely remember a dream, and if I do, they are always in, Andy Griffith show, black and white.

Portion Distortion


Have you ever seen street art like this?

This artwork was created using chalk, a wide-lens camera and a sidewalk. 

By looking through a wide-lens camera he has set up, the artist is able to create the illusion that the drawing is 3-D on a flat surface. 

Here is the same art viewed at the “wrong angle.”

Quite different looking at it this way! The drawing is warped, stretched and actually 3 times the size.

The artist “tricks” your eye and mind into perceiving that the picture is something different than what it really appears to be.

This is exactly what happens with our eating habits. This phenomenon is called portion distortion. You can bet that restaurants are aware exactly what this is.

  There were some really fascinating (I know some of you find that hard to believe.) and amazing things to do with the people and processes they used to complete it, but one thing stood out to me more than any other:  It took over 70 years to complete.
